Q: Why does my cat drool?

It only happens when he's happy - he'll be purring really loudly, and I'll be petting him or something.

Anyway, all of a sudden I'm covered in cat drool. The good thing is that it's not thick, like with a dog, but honestly it gets everywhere. It's as if he got a drink of water and just kept it in his mouth.

It's gross.

I agree that your cat is feeling happy and content but I think it may be more than that. The kneading motion that our adult cats often do when they feel happy and content is one that stems from kittenhood. It was used on their mother to bring the milk for nursing. My parents had a cat that drooled and loved to suck on the collar of men's shirts. I currently have one (I know this may gross some people out) that loves to nurse on your neck. He's an adult who was not taken away from his mother early. I'm not a cat psychologist of course, but I think the drooling may stem back to the happy days of kittenhood and nursing.

Christine T. nabbed it again! And Matt actually answered his own question by stating that "It only happens when he's [cat] happy". I have one cat, Fuzzy, who really drools when I pet him. I know it is a good sign (he's elated) and I simply tolerate it and/or try not to get too wet.

[Hey, Matt, maybe your next question should be on Multipersonality Cat Owners!]

I have had cats that do this, usually its when they are marking you. When a cat rubs its face on something or someone its using its scent to mark you as theirs, sometimes they drool as well. It's just a sign that you belong to them but its just as messy as dog drool.

Sounds like your cat is just super happy and content! I have found that some cats drool when they are really relaxed and happy when their owners are petting them. Congratulations, your cat loves you.... :)
