Q: Why does feces stick to rabbits butt?

June 21, 2010 | By Johnnyc | 4 answers | Expired: 1537 days ago

We have to take our dwarf Marshall rabbit to vet every 5 weeks to have its butt cleaned and shaved. We feed him Peter's Maintenance formula pellets (1 cup) three times a day (6am, 4pm, and 10pm). We give him unlimited Peter's Timothy Hay. We also give him a cup of spring mix lettuce around 7 pm. We also give him a small piece of carrot twice a week. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

STOP the lettuce!!! Real rabbits are not cartoon or literary characters, lettuce is BAD for them! I had multiple rabbits for years, and NEVER had to clean poop of them. NO lettuce, celery or other "watery" vegetable or fruits. Unlimit timothy hay is good, but make sure it is fresh and clean. Carrots, grass, apple tree branches, leaves (of certain plants), peel of cucumbers....all good. Your rabbit can be perfectly healthy on good quality pellets, so stop all the extras for a few days until the mess stops. Also make sure your rabbit is living a rabbit cage (with a wire floor) or if in a guinea pig type cage make sure your bunny is litterbox trained and has the option of litterbox. Rabbits are super clean animals, if your's is dirty it is sick, sorry.
Good luck!

I don't know but it's really annoying. I fed mine Timothy pellets and fresh veggies and fruit and every few weeks I'd still have stick him in the tub. I've read that no matter what you feed them they will still have diarrhea from time to time. nothing really you can do. if it lasts longer than a day or two I'd take him to the vet. Once it was real runny and lasted 2 days so we took him to the vet and he had some kind of parasite but it cleared up after some meds.

I agree- something in his diet is giving him the diarrhea. I would say cut out all fresh veggies for one week and see if he improves.

He might also need some probiotics. This would help with his digestion. Check with your vet about what to give to rabbits.

Good luck!

Are these foods what he has been getting for a while? Maybe he is getting to much fiber in his diet. Maybe switching the spring mix to just spinach or another dark green might help.
