Q: Why does cat insist I pet her before she eats?
I understand a great deal about cats but the one thing that has never made sense to me is my cat, Luna's need to be petted the second she approaches her food bowl. She will sit in the kitchen and meow for someone to pet her (normally me) and will not stop til someone does. If you leave the rooms, she will follow you and expect you to follow her back to the bowl. I know other cats that are like this although my first cat never did this. Anyone happen to know why this happens? Thanks!

Someone--perhaps, you--probably petted her before feeding her when she was a kitten. Your cat may think this is part of the "food ritual" and wants to maintain the pattern. You are her "provider", so YOU lead the way. It is as though she is asking permission or seeking your approval to eat the food you provided for her. The petting may be perceived as a sign ("okay") that you do approve of her eating that food.
