I think a lot of people purchase pets on impulse, spur of the moment, without taking the time to research or consider how long they live, just how much time, effort and care go into these pets to keep them happy/healthy.They are more into the idea of just having a cool pet than the actual realization of what that really involves, and then the animals are neglected, and forgotten.
As for the actual abusers that go past the neglect stage and into the sadistic torturing/killing on purpose, well let's just say that they have emotional, mental issues. These are sick individuals that need meds and a long stay at a Mental Health Facility,or worse, thrown in jail with the key to freedom buried for ever.

I think a lot of people just don't do their research OR in our "instant gratification" society, people act impulsively and worry about the consequences later. It's such a shame (and educating the public is key), because our pets deserve the very best we can give them!
