To me..pets are somewhat like people. There are some you get along with and some you can't stand. I think it has a little bit to do with the age they are introduced but it's mainly the personalities of the animals if they will get along or not...in my opinion and experience.

I have had many dogs and cats that got along, both that were 'raised' together, and not. I have had birds and cats play together, rats and cats, rabbits and cats and dogs...It al depends on the animals, the environment and the humans. I even have one dog that had to "kiss" EVERY animal that was brought into the house (lizards, goat, cats, birds, chinchilla...and on and on) he NEVER hurt, barked or chased any of the animals he would just get close enough to lick them, and either ignore them after that (in the case of the lizards) or play with them....actually he was TERRIFIED of the bird (who had clipped wings) but would chase the dog around trying to bite it...The dog was about 80 pounds, the bird was a sun conure...go figure some times animals can't be explained.

I think they get along when they share the same stable energy. It's always so cute seeing a dog and a cat be best friends :-)

Because they are young and have not yet understood that one or the other is prey naturally. and/or they grow up with them and get to know that the other is friend not fo.

They haven't learned fear or enemies yet. My dogs and cats still get along as long as the cats remember not to run.

probably because they are equal in size and there is less friction size wise

because they are too young to know they aren't suposed to and the kitten doesn't run in fear or threaten the dog
