Why do dogs eat cat poop?!

-Let me start off by saying that I didn't know what category to put this under. I almost did food, health, training... there were like 4 or 5 I could've put this under haha!-
Peewee (peekapoo 3 1/2 yrs. old) use to eat cat poop out of the little box all the time! I got her to stop doing it then I got Emma (7 month old lab) & she won't stop! I thought she did (I haven't seen her eat it in a month or two) but she just BROUGHT me a cat poopie and DROPED IT IN MY LAP!!! I try to keep the liter box out of reach for her, but there are times she still gets to it. Why do they do this and how can I stop it?! (She has Peewee doing it again sometimes too!)

Cats are true carnivores and have a shorter intestinal tract than some other animals, which means there food is not broken down as much. Cat food is usually much higher in fat and protein, so to a dog, this litter pan is like a tasty little treat. I have been training dogs for 12 years and I have NEVER met a dog that was not tempted to go in the litter box. The best thing you can do is work on basic training commands with your dogs such as "drop it" and "leave it" and puppy proof the litter box so your dogs do not have access to it. You might also consider giving the Coprophragria (hope I spelled that right) tablets to your cat and see if that helps as a deterrent.

Dogs are opportunistic! Teach your dog a leave it command, and keep the box where they can't get in it. My dogs will automatically drop whatever they have when I give the leave it command, especially since they usually get a better treat as a reward!

cats don't fully digest their food, so the dog smells the food in the poop and so they dont think they're eating poop they think it's food. It's really wierd they don't digest most of the food they eat.

My dogs do the same thing! I actually asked my vet about it and he said that the cat crunchies are actually full of protein YUCK! I moved my litter box up high so the dogs can reach it...it's the only way to keep them out. And once they get one in their mouth you CAN NOT get them to drop it! BLAH!

I have mine gated off with a child gate.. only the cats have access to the bathroom area. This protects and gives them privacy from the dog, puppy and baby.

yep, dogs are just gross sometimes!
there are some very smart devices that keep your cat litter box away from nosey dogs, check at Petco.

Because they like it. No other reason. I have to keep the boxes in a room the dogs can't get to. When I had a basement I kept them there. Try covered boxes. It might be a little harder for the dogs. Or a high place the dogs can't reach or a blockade the cats can jump and the dogs can't. You just have to out smart them, which can be tough.
