Why do dogs curl up in a ball while sleeping?

My dog does this every time she sleeps?

I would think it's a defensive mechanism on their part. They protect their throats, bellies, etc. that can cause more damage if they are attacked.

I think it is two reasons. Before dogs were domesticated they slept outside in the cold and sometimes snow. They curled up to keep warm. They curl up on their stomachs to protect the throat and chest safe from any attackers. my Labrador does this and if you touch her in those spots she growls.
