Q: Why do dogs cough?

December 17, 2008 | By Lisa D. | 12 answers | Expired: 2068 days ago

The past few mornings when I have up and in the afternoon when I get home from work my dog is "coughing". Thats the best way I can describe it, it is kind of like a hacking noise but she does not vomit. Any ideas suggestions or remedies please share!

SOme of my rescues have come in with problems with coughing. Its always good to get them checked out by a vet. The problems causing coughing that we've encountered have been heartworms, trachea problems, acid reflux/spasms.

I noticed my dog was coughing alot lately -- I started the humidifier in the house, and that helps. Also, he has a heart murmur, and the vet told me if his cough worsened, they could put him on meds for that. If your dog is coughing alot, I would definitely get it checked out.

if your dog is a small it can be his trachea. it can be kennel cough it can be his heart. take him to the vet and give a good history, has he been to a boarding place or groomer or dog park?

Everyone is on target about kennel cough. A trip to your vet is a good idea, but remember that kennel cough doesn't necessarily mean pumping your dog up with a cocktail of vaccines and antibiotics all in one visit.

A simple regimen of Clavomox for a week will work if your dog has kennel cough.

Also, consider what your dog is eating (premium vs. mass produced food) and if you dog is a puller when you walk, changed from a choker to an Easy Walk Harness.

I definitely suggest a trip to your vet. It could be allergies or kennel cough or something else. If your dog was recently kenneled or went to a dog park, I would guess kennel cough.

Dogs cough for all the same reasons we do. Dogs do however, do a weird sort of 'sneeze' we call backward sneezing. It's an esophageal spasm which makes them snuffle through their nose on inhalation. It's harmless, and can be remedied by gently massaging their throat and calming them down.
Hope this helps.

It could be allergies but I would definitely take your dog to the vet because it could be kennel cough!

Our dog coughs in the Spring from some type of allergies, but if the air around has been the same I think I would go to the Vet.

I think I would check with a Vet, they do cough once in a while, maybe dust or something but if your pet has been kenneled with other other dogs or if she is new to your home it could be kennel cough, if she pulls on the the leash she could have damaged her esophagus, there are probably allot of things that could be wrong or it could be nothing, but I would have a Vet take a look, she shouldn't be coughing every day
