Q: why do cats run away from owners when there let out at night?

I don't have any cats that go outdoors but I would say they probably run away because when you let them outside, they want to make the decision as to when they return. The best thing would be to either keep them indoors or possibly get some sort of outdoor enclosure such as a screen tent etc...so you could let them out there and they couldn't escape.

Growing up with indoor outdoor cats, I always assusmed it was because they don't want to be brought back inside. They'll come when they're good and ready! Night is the best time for hunting. Now mine just stay inside.

I agree with the third comment- if you want your cat to come to you- act like you don't care (i.e. start to walk away) and he/she will probably follow. Have you ever noticed that in a room full of people they tend to gravitate to the person who is Not a cat person?
