Why are my dogs foot pads so rough?

My dogs foot pads seem very rough like very rough sand paper. We do take her for long walks on blacktop and concrete trails and she also licks her feet a lot. I am thinking maybe she is getting too much oats or fillers in her old dog food that may affect this. Am I correct? I'm thinking this does have something to do with her diet? I have changed her diet to no fillers with more meat, fruit and vegetables. She is only just over a year and a half. Any suggestions?

Walking on outdoor surfaces can cause rough pads but there are a few pad softeners you can buy, one is called Musher's Secret (it's a little expensive) or there's one made by Happy Jack, I think it's called Pad Kote or you can use a product called Bag Balm that you can find in most feed stores and some drug stores, I think it's great for many skin issues on pets and people.

supplement her food w/fish oil. one fish oil capsule per day. you could also add vitamin e - though i would use 1/2 a capsule per day.
her feet are callused, which is perfectly normal for dogs who walk a lot on concrete. if she is licking them a lot, they may be bothering her. if you could let her walk on grass instead of pavement, that would also help.

I had this same question, I figured it was from concrete and cement also. I agree, about looking for pad softeners though, I'm going to.
