Q: Who wants to be a vet/who is a vet?

May 16, 2009 | By Abigail K. | 9 answers | Expired: 1916 days ago

I really want to be a vet when I grow up. So I wanted to see how many other people want to be a vet, or are a vet.

i'm 18 and i've worked at a 12-doctor veterinary hospital for over a year and half now. i was 16 turning 17 when i started. i do xrays, ultrasounds, i help restrain animals for procedures (nails, blood, vaccines, anal glands, etc.) and i've also observed my cat's spay and an exploritory (when there's something internally wrong or something they ate that needs to be removed which was the case). It's a huge and wonderful experience, I do alot of hands on things and i love it. One of your best bets is go to your vet and see if you can observe for a day. You get to see what things they deal with and it will definately decide if it's a good idea for you.

i've never wanted to be a vet...at least not the traditional kind. i could deal with tragic accidents and unpreventable illness and old age...these kinds of tragedies i can handle. but it's the ignorant, self-centered pet owners who are more interested in their own convenience than in the health and well-being of their pets that would get me. i couldn't take dealing with that every day, and i know that's a part of it.

now, i've always been interested in both animals and in natural health...i've always wondered what would be involved in getting into holistic veterinary type stuff. i'm sure you'd still get your share of real moron pet owners in that specialty too, but...i wonder.

If I were younger I would become a veterinarian but I would apply for a job with the US food and drug administration. (FDA) They employ veterinarians to determine the safety and the efficacy of medicine and food additives. That would be up my alley.

as a kid, i always wanted to be a vet. as i grew up, i realized that although i wanted to work w/animals, i wasn't so interested in the medical aspect.
i see this a lot w/minors, that they want to be a vet but medicines a little errr. i still think being a vet is a great and noble thing to aspire to, but if medicines not your thing {for me, my thing is behavior, training, and rehabilitation}, there are many other studies that can incorporate your love of animals.
medicine can be a lot of fun though. whatever path you choose, i would recommend learning as much as you can now so you can kick butt later on.

I HOPE THAT IF YOU CHOOSE TO BE A VET THAT YOUR PURPOSE IS FOCUSED MORE ON THE ANIMALS THAN THE MONEY. SOME VETS WONT EVEN LET YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOOR UNLESS THE MONEY IS UP FRONT!

i have thought about this for a while..but i honestly dont think i could take seeing animals in pain on a daily basis. although helping animals is something that i would absolutely love to do..honestly, i would probably end up having a severe emotional breakdown. some ppl have what it takes to do this kind of work and i applaude them with the upmost respect.
i wish you luck in whatever career you choose to aspire towards.
