Where does your small pet go when you clean its cage? Are they loose or do you have a special place where you keep them?

I let my hamster run around in it's ball while I clean his cage. He's supervised of course.

We use a playpen for them! It's like their little area away from their normal den. It takes a long time to clean too.

When Chester our mouse was still alive, I would coax him into a piece of paper towel tube and lift it out of his aquarium cage and into a small plastic 'critter keeper' type container right next to it. He would stay there safely while I cleaned his cage and then went back the same way. I miss my little guy.

For a quick clean up (change papers, litter box, bedding, etc) we place our ferrets in their travel carrier if they are awake. Sometimes we can get in while they are sleeping and one person can clean while the other distracts any that wake up. If we are doing a complete clean (with a complete chemical sterilization) then we pull out their backup cage for them to play in until their normal cage is ready again.
We tried a couple of times to clean while they were having their normal play time out of the cage, but they were always more interested in what was coming out of the cage and wanted to check out what was in the garbage.

When I was in my freshman year of high school I had four hamsters and without knowing it after we got them and brought them home we found out that one of the four was a male hamster when we had been told they were all female hamsters anyways a couple days later the 3 female hamsters including my hamster which was one of the 3 named streamangel gave birth to baby hamsters. when we cleaned the cage while the mothers were raising thier young we had to be careful and we would put these specail gloves on to move the babies. luckily none of the mothers never rejected the babies. but when we cleaned the cages we would either put them in a box or in a small portabale pet carrier made for hamsters.

We had a small cage we used sometimes. But mostly we let our guinea pigs run around and explore while doing the cage cleaning.

I usually let my bunnies run around, and put the piggies in their playpen or their travel cage :)

When my daughter had her hamster, Honey Jo, we used to keep it in a smaller cage which was specifically for when we cleaned hers. There were also many times we would just put her in the hamster ball and she would roll around...Midnight and Fluffy didn't know what to make of that! lol
