Any age is good for a child to have a pet. However, you must realize that you are ultimately responsible for the animal's welfare and can not become angry with a child for not feeding/walking/etc. Involve the child in the pet's care, but you must make certain the animal is cared for. Throughout my entire childhood, we always had pets, usually dogs. My parents made certain they were cared for and I played with them. That's the way it should be. Children are children and are not mature enough to care for a pet on their own.

I only have fur babies so far, but I grew up surrounded by pets & I don't recall a time when I didn't. They were my best friends ~ my everything. They helped shape the caring person I am today. I am more gentler because of my pets. I have more compassion & love because of them.

we feel that when the child is mature enough to take on some of the responsibility of taking care of the pet that would determine the proper age
