You could start feeding them adult food now or when they turn a year.

The shelter told us to start them on adult food when they turned a year old.

It looks like you already have an answer, but because I know an answer too, I'd like to get the points for the shelter I support. Once your cat has turned a year or a few days before you should start mixing your current food with the new adult food, mixing less of the old food with the new food each day. Eventually, the new food will be the only food you will use. The mising helps avoid stomach upset. This makes the switching over as easy on the cat as possible.

Now is a good time to start switching them over. Make sure you do it gradually by mixing the two foods until you can take out the kitten food completely. This will ease any potential intestinal discomfort they may experience.

I would switch the cats over now. Really any time between 8 months and a year is a good time. If you keep them on kitten food too long, they will become obese because it has more calories than they need.

I switched my little kitten face over when she was a year. But the problem was, she had already been eating my older cat's adult food on the sly, so she was kind of used to grown-up stuff already. But it didn't kill her and she grew up to be a healthy and naughty grown-up.
