Q: When can a puppy socialize?

There is a puppy playtime event being hosted at PetCo this weekend. I was thinking about taking my 8 week old puppy to it. They gate off an area and allow people to bring their puppies in and let them play with toys and other puppies. I was a little worried that she was too young. Does anyone have an opinion?

Ethel02: What do you mean when all of her shots are done? She has had 3 parvo shots now. Do you mean her initial shots?

It is impossible for her to have had 3 Dhpp shots already. The first one is given at 6wks and they are given 4wks apart in a 3 shot series, then they get a rabies vac at 16wks. Not to mention the bordetella (kennel cough) vac, that is 2 boosters given 4wks apart. An 8wk old pup does not have enough vaccines to safely go to an event like that yet. Socialization should occur at this age in a safe environment, that is not used by stranger dogs, and with pets that you know are vaccinated. Puppies need safe socialization time, so be patient. It's worth it to wait. Check into puppy training classes that require all members to be vaccinated so they can learn in a safe place.
