Q: What's your pet's name and why?

February 9, 2009 | By Beth D. | 38 answers | Expired: 2005 days ago

Just curious today, I named my Dogs certain things and they are kinda unique to them. Liberty Belle is my first dog and I'm very patriotic being an Army Brat and now Army Wife so it seemed to fit. Then there is Lucy Mae which is kinda a country name and I'm from Kansas and tend to be a bit country. So my question is what are your pets names and why did you name them that?

We have a dog named Sir Prize. My husband brought him home as a birthday present for our other dog. I was completely surprised and as we were discussing what to name him, I said "well, we could just call him Sir Prize".

The dogs:

I once worked with a guy who called everyone "Dude" about a couple hundred times a day. When the straggly little Sato showed up in my carport one day, "Hey, Dude" just popped out and we called him Dude everafter.

Flash looked like a streak of white lightning running across the yard, so I changed his name to Flash from the sissified Fluffy he came with.

Boo is short for BooBoo Bear, Yogi's little friend.

Mimi is short for Mishka Mooshka Moo.

Fifi stays on her toes because after she came with the name Sweat Pea, I started calling her Twink, short for Twinkle Toes because she's like a dainty little ballerina when she does her little prancing dance. But then someone told me that 'twink' is a slur for gay, so Fifi-Foo fits her fine and fits in with the rest.

Speedy is the only one who hasn't had a name change (yet). He reminds me of a Sgt. Bilko though.

The cats:

Babycats got her name from the song "Babyface" which I sing to her like a lullaby since the day I got her.

Mr. Bilbo Baggins name is from The Hobbit. But first it was just plain Bil from the song "Wedding Bell Blues/I Love You Bill" which was playing on the radio the day I was bringing him home as a nine week old kitten.

Sparkie's my little dominatrix that thinks she's a dog. It's short for Princess Sparkle Pony, because the gold sparkles in her black fur and it's one of my favorite political blogs, a rip on Condi Rice.

Currently 2 of our cat have British themed names. We have an Oliver (Oliver Twist), and a Rumpole who is named after the English Barrister (lawyer), who is the main character in books by John Mortimer (also a TV series)

Our white long-haired cat Bentley is named after Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley. He was the first person to photograph snowflakes snowflakebentley.com/

Butterscotch is named after her color, she's an orange tabby.

DD has a Thoroughbred ex-racehorse who came with the barn name "Markie" which it short for Remarkably (her racing name). The name Remarkably most likely came from her sire who was named Marked Tree. DD shows her under the name Foxglove just becauseshe really liked the name.

'Sherman Tank'. I love older names and my husband loves 'dog' names...so we compromised when we adopted our mastiff mix puppy from the local humane society. We use 'Sherman' most of the time, but we affectionately call him 'Tank' when his clumsy puppy ways get the better of him.

"Duffy" was about 7 when his first owner died of a stroke and the ma's children abandoned him ... we did not change his name,
"Piwi" is the Cherokee word for small and is our Beagle/JRT who weighs in at 16 pounds.
Angus McGee was a Terrier mix that just plain looked like an old Scottish gentleman.
"Tsula" was our Yellow Lab and her name means "Fox' in Cherokee (my wife is a citizen of Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma).
"Old Timer" was what we named a Scottish Deer Hound that was at least 10 years old when we rescued her at 58 pounds and near death.
"Yoda" was a Doxie mix that ... well ... he just looked like Yoda of Star Wars.
"Lola" was our full blood Pit Bull, and she had the most exotic golden eyes and looked like a "vamp."

Blew, because his racing name was BlueNGold, wanted to spell Blew different because we just had a sick kitty pass away named Blue (he was a blue point siamese).

Renner because his was 'Tin Pan Man' for racing and no one ever gave him another name. It was on the list of names my daughter liked for baby names and she didn't use it, I really liked it, so gave it to my new ex-racer who had no name.

Scooter I didn't give him this name his racing name had 'Scoop' in it so maybe they thought it sounded close or something? No clue, absolutely does 'not' fit him he is 80 pounds of crazy. But he already answered to that name so we have kept it though much of the time he is called 'Scootie' or 'Scoots'

Monty was named due to the fact that he was so 'off the wall' as a kitten, and still is going on 20 years old. Named after Monty Pyton's Flying Circus.

Vinni's real name (get ready for this) Vincent Romeo. He was a stray that came into our home around 3 years of age and one daughter was reading Romeo and Juliet in HS, the other loved watching the Beauty and the Beast series on TV, the main male character in that was named Vincent. Hence trying to teach cooperation at their ages, between sisters and maintain family harmony, he got the name Vincent Romeo (he is a tough little guy living through all he did before joining our family, I called him Vinni for short and it stuck) Ayyy Vinni. And I will stop with those 5.

Murphy. Because he was given a bad name by the shelter (Sir Winfrey), needed a new one, and one the of shelter volunteers said, "He looks like a Murphy." She was totally right, so that what I named him.
