Q: Whats your favorite brand of dog food?
Nov 12, 2008
WOW! Everyone else replying is recommending/advocating rather low quality foods. Allow me to interject...
My current favorite brand, based on both availability and quality of formulation is Blue Buffalo. It's all natural, all human grade, all sourced in the United States (with the exception of New Zealand lamb), and contains no corn, wheat, soy, gluten, vegetable proteins, or byproducts. No artificial fibers, fillers, additives, preservatives, colors, or flavors. It's great stuff. However, there are many, many great foods out there... none of them are made by Iams, Purina, or Science Diet.
To find a great food, get in the habit of reading ingredient lists. Ignore most of the rest of the label, the ingredients are what matter. Read the first ten ingredients, and avoid any foods that contain corn, wheat, soy, gluten, vegetable protein, or byproduct. Preferably, unless the ingredient list is very small, you should see a good, species-specific meat as at least two or more of the first five ingredients. Great brands include Innova, California Natural, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Pinnacle, Merrick, Wysong, TimberWolf, Solid Gold, Canine Caviar, Orijen, Wellness, Castor and Pollux, Nature's Variety/Prairie, and the list goes on. For PetSmart availability, I like Blue Buffalo first, by Nature Organics second. At Petcos, I prefer Blue Buffalo, then Solid Gold, Wellness, Castor and Pollux, and Natural Balance.

Anything in the Purina line. It's affordable, I have four to feed, it's a reputable company. They have a 'medicinal' line available at vets. My vet recommended it to me and I've always stayed with it. I usually go with Beneful but also do the Chow. The dogs love it and I have never had upset stomachs or gas issue unlike others.
