I was wondering, that with the economy being what it is, do any pet owners out in Z2 Land have any tips on how to save money on pet related expenses.

reuse / re-purpose things whenever possible. for example, for years i used a purse made out of an old burlap sack, but recently the strap broke beyond repair. rather than throwing it out, after a little snipping and a little sewing, i turned it into 3 different cat toys. also, simply look for ways to "do-it yourself" rather than buying things pre-made. a little bit of wood, a few nails, and a big spool of sisal rope will be much cheaper than going out and buying a good cat scratcher.

I stock up on bedding when I find it on sale. Fresh produce varies in prices from store to store. I watch for specials and buy what is on sale. I don't cut back on pellets. I only buy Cavy Cuisine and Kaytee Timothy for Guinea pigs. But, I do watch the sale ads to see if it's on sale at any of the local stores.

I have a multi pet discount through my vet and knowing how tight money is for everyone, I have 5 fur kids.

Because I belive in paying it forward to help as much as possible, my company Pampered Paw Gifts, We think every doggie and kitty cat should get a gift, so we keep our prices pretty close to our cost.
It is our idea that with excellent service and customers' re-orders and telling others about us, that we will grow slowly but in the right way. :)

We donate a portion of our profits to select animal welfare organizations and local welfare organizations and charities. Just a few of our local animal organizations that are close to our hearts can be found on our Community Corner page.

As we grow we put a lot back into the local and national rescue groups that need our help so much! They do so much with so little.

In some areas, the Humane Society gives you a certificate towards having your pet spayed or neutered. You just have to call your local chapter and ask if they offer that program. There's also a service called Animeals that gives you a bag of pet food every month if you are struggling to make ends meet.

You got a lot of good suggestions and some I might try myself.
My vet gives me a discount for mutilple pets. So when it's time for shots etc. I take them all in at once. I get money off on each office vsit and each extra pet gets a deeper discount.
I also buy food in bulk and make some of my own cat toys-they love them just as much and don't know they didn't come from a store.
Some friends and I will share toys that our pets don't like with others. It's like getting free toys.

I watch for items I frequently buy to be on sale.
While my cats all are fed a high quality food, (not know for being cheap) I think it helps with their overall health so it saves on doctor bills.
I also have made toys, and grew cat nip!

I have LOTS of animals. For my many guinea pigs, we use the CareFresh litter because it stops the smell. It was very expensive, so we found a cheap bedding to put on the bottom and put the CareFresh on top. For my frogs, we buy their stuff when it is on sale. My fish aren't much care, just buy them the basics. For my dogs, we always can find coupons for their dog food and we buy other things when it is on sale, we also cut back on treats and toys. We buy play sand for the hermit crabs instead of "hermit Crab" sand, it is the same stuff. For our birds, we feed them a certain amount of food a day, and then that is it. We let our lizards outside to eat their food, they like it better that way anyways. I hope this helps...

I have a background in animal care and I feel comfortable treating my pets most of the time, so I save a lot of money that way. I also raise my own crickets for my leopard gecko and my boyfriend and I make toys for my cat.

I BUY MY PUPPY ONLY SCIENCE DIET BECAUSE SHE WILL NOT EAT ANYTHING ELSE AND I HAVE BEEN FINDING COUPONS IN THE NEWSPAPERS FOR THEIR FOOD. I HAVE CUT DOWN ON SNACKS WHICH I THINK WILL BE HEALTHIER FOR HER ALSO. BUT HAVE GOTTEN BONES WHICH SHE LOVES AND THAT LASTS LONGER THEN A LITTLE TREAT. PLUS ALSO FOR TREATS I HAVE BEEN BUYING LITTLE BAGS OF BABY CARROTS AND IT IS LOT HEALTHIER AS WELL AND CHEAPER THEN A BAG OF TREATS THAT ONLY HAS ABOUT 10 IN A PACK. ALSO I HAVE BEEN GROOMING HER MYSELF AND HAVEN'T BOUGHT DOGGY BAGS IN AWHILE. I HAVE BEEN USING GROCERY BAGS AND THE LITTLE BAGS THAT YOU PUT YOUR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IN WHEN SHOPPING.
