Q: What to do after your dog loses their toenail?

December 6, 2008 | By MoonPaws | 7 answers | Expired: 2192 days ago

I took my dog to PetSmart groomers and they had an accident yesterday. They said his foot got caught and his toenail was completely ripped out. =( I picked him up right away. He's not on any pain medicine and the vet told the groomer if he seems to be in pain to bring him back. I do not want to bring my dog back there! I called his vet today and left a message, but they are closed until Monday. Is there anything else I can do for my baby? All I've been doing so far is pampering. =(

Their Vet did not do this and I would take him there right away! Do not give baby asperin as that will not help and should only be given with a Vets advice. He needs to be monitered and possibly put on antibiotics as I know someone whos dog this just happened to and he was on pain pills and antibiotics and the foot was wrapped.

i have heard of this happening many times before by the petsmart groomers, take him to your vet and get him checked out then send the bill to petsmart they should pay for it

Just keep it clean (soap and water - rinse well) and watch the area of signs of infection - increased redness, tenderness, swelling, pussy drainage. If your dog starts to bleed, hold direct pressure on the toe and the bleeding should stop. Try to keep your dog still if it does start bleeding again.
