I live in Louisiana, too, and Kathy had some good advice about being careful what type seed you use. I ruined a lovely flowerbed by hanging as feeder over it that had mixed seed. I've got some crazy weeds growing in there now that are very invasive. I should have stuck with sunflower seed - if they sprout, it's a bonus. Also, if you're putting seed out at this time of year, be sure to keep it up through the winter. Otherwise, you'll have the birds dependent on you for food, and they won't know how to find their own if you quit providing it. Spoiled little boogars. :-)

Hi, in addition to determining what to put in it, make sure that the location is squirrel and rodent proof. Once an animals discover they can reach a bird feeder, the birds don't stand a chance. Keep in mind that whatever seeds you put in there might fall to the ground and grow. I had a birdfeeder and ended up with every possible kind of plants growing in my yard, many which became invasive.

I fill my feeder with sunflower seeds. It doesn't have any fillers and attracts a large variety of birds. Once it a while I will add a little cracked corn to it. Cindy gave you some really good advice about researching the varieties that you have there in Louisiana.

I recommend you go to the library or a bookstore and find out what kind of birds are in your area and what they eat. Different birds have different diets. You also want to research whether the birds you want to feed eat off the ground or eat from feeders. Have fun!

I live in Ohio and only had luck with oiled sunflower seed mixtures. I also use a thistle sock and suet.
