Q: What should be done with people who harm animals?

There have been a number of very disturbing reports of animal cruelty recently. What do you think should be done to/with individuals who commit these crimes? I'm an anthropologist studying this problem, and Id appreciate your candid comments!

Really, not much can be done at this point because a lot of the state statutes do not allow for harsh punishments for animal cruelty, abuse, or neglect. Arkansas has recently made such crimes a felony, which is a step in the right direction, but more states need to follow suit for a real change to be seen. Also, we need to look at the differences in cultures in America, because I feel that this does play a distinct role in how individuals feel about animals, and in turn treat those animals.

I agree with Michele's answer. I think something to consider is that people who harm animals are more apt to harm humans as well. I think penalties should be similar to crimes committed against humans. Mandatory education related to cruelty to animals, possibly community service, should also be a part of sentencing,as well as jail time and fines, depending on the situation.

i think all of the people hurting the animals should be put on trial and if the are proven guilty they shold be put in jail for at least 5 years.

Unless you are doing a cross-cultural comparison (or there is more to your study than your are indicating), this doesn't sound like a topic for an anthropologist! (But, to each his/her own...)

The "penalty" would have to be proportionate to the harm done, and decided on a case-by-case basis within the minimum-maximum range of a particular jurisdiction. In general, though, I think the offenders need to be (re-)socialized to learn to respect living things and not cause harm to others--animal or human.

I truly believe that those that harm animals should not be allowed to have children, I think if you can hurt a defenseless animal than they can hurt children. As for punishment, I am a strong believer in an eye for an eye.

I think that cruelty to animals is just as bad as if you were being cruel to your own child, and why would you get an aniaml just to be mean to it and if you find pleasure in being mean to an animal you desirve to go to jail for life.

Wow, good question. I think that animal cruelty is horrible and although I would like to say to treat them the way they've treated the animal I know that is not a possibility. So, I guess that definite jail time is a must!! Then there needs to be some kind of reassurance that the person has no access to animals in the future.
