Q: What should be done with people who harm animals?
There have been a number of very disturbing reports of animal cruelty recently. What do you think should be done to/with individuals who commit these crimes? I'm an anthropologist studying this problem, and Id appreciate your candid comments!

I think the punishment should be harsh. Not a slap on the wrist.

Really, not much can be done at this point because a lot of the state statutes do not allow for harsh punishments for animal cruelty, abuse, or neglect. Arkansas has recently made such crimes a felony, which is a step in the right direction, but more states need to follow suit for a real change to be seen. Also, we need to look at the differences in cultures in America, because I feel that this does play a distinct role in how individuals feel about animals, and in turn treat those animals.

I feel the same way any abuse to any animal should be considerated a felony. I know here in Pennslyania it is a felony if the abuse is done to a zoo animal on the first offense, but it is only considered a felony on a cat or dog when it is the second offense. I know some of the states have it as a felony on the first offense. I am in the process of trying to find out what I need to do or can do to get the laws changed here. If any one has an helpful input I would appriciate it
