Q: What kind of collar would you use on a small kitten?

My kitten is only 8 weeks old. I would like to start training him to use a collar. I tried one with a cute little bell on it, but he takes it off and thinks it's a new toy. I decided to put the collar away for now. Any suggestions?

I find a collar with a bell or even a tag on it bothers cats cause they can hear and fell it move. I would get a tag from Boomerang pet tags online, they are great, and you can get the kind that slips on the collar and doesn't even hang down...great for cats or really any pet. But for now, just have her/him wear the collar wtih no tag..after all, you aren't going to be letting your kitten out to get lost! Goodluck. Boomerang has great lightweight plastic tags and the kind that slip flush on the collar...good place to shop!

You may want to try a small harness. This will also be gentle on kitty's trachea and not harm the neck. Hope this helps.

Personally, I have never had real good luck with a collar. A couple of years ago my neighbor gave me a harness and leash. The harnesses are harder for them to get off and won't choke like a regular collar would should you choose to attach the leash and take them outdoors. I must be honest though, I've never seen a cat who likes a collar period, at least none of mine anyway. I hope this gives you a little food for thought!
