Skitters has bleeding gums her gums are nice and pink I looked at them but every time she chews on a rawhyde lately there is blood left on it. I don't know what this is or why Skitters chews on a big variety of diffrent rawhydes so they could not be the problem. Could it be gum disease or what she does not chew on her rawhydes as much and does not enjoy them as much as she used to she is an old dog but should I take her to the vet for this or just try getting her some greenies she will no longer allow me to brush her teeth but she does not act as if she is in pain any suggestions?

At her age it's probably gingivitis. I would have her teeth professionally cleaned and then do your best to keep up with it. There is flavored toothpaste for dogs available that makes them more agreeable, but if the best you can do is a quick wipe with a clean cloth dampened with diluted baking soda, it's still better than nothing, right? You should also discontinue the rawhides. To an extent they help clean, but the edges are also really rough on gums and will add to the irritation.

I totally agree with Jillian. Older dogs and cats usually have more plague buildup, especially if they don't receive regular brushing. Plaque causes bleeding gums and gum disease. Skitters probably needs to have her teeth scaled, which is a deep cleaning of the teeth and gums. Rawhide is hard on dogs' gums as it cuts and crapes them, leaving them open to bacteria...not to mention, they're not too good on the digestive tract either. I would look for other options in the treat department.
