Q: What is the best way to travel on a plane with a pug?

I am taking a job where I will have to fly with my dog. I would really like to take him on the plane with me. What airlines are best? Which carriers are best?

i have a friend who flies home with her cat reguarly. you need to make the pet portion of the reservation asap because most airlines only allow 3 pets per flight and you don't want to get shut out. the going rate seems to be $100 for a small pet under maybe 15lbs in cabin. my friend uses a cloth pet carrier and it fits under the seat in front of her. shes never had any problems. i shipped my dog as cargo once - thats a whole other story. it gets more expensive (i paid $400 but it was international), i used continental, overall the process was surprisingly smooth. he needed a hard crate (they didn't care what brand) with food and water attached at the door. he needed a few inches of space above his head in the crate. oh and i think in either case they need proof of rabies vaccination. i needed to get a vet signature of good health within 3 days before the flight. i'm willing to bet most of the american airline carriers have similiar policies - i'd find a good fare for yourself then google search their pet policies before you buy the fare and make sure it sounds ok.

southwest i think allows pets but you have to pay extra for the animal and the dog has to be in the crate or kennel to be on the plane but i would ask the airline before you board the plane if its okay if its a small dog they don't mind if its a big dog they will mind depending on the airline you fly some airlines don't allow pets so ask before you book the flight to make sure

Most airlines will only allow pets up to 10 or 15 lbs in cabin with you. There is usually a $50 - $100 fee per flight and then you are going to have to make sure you have all his paperwork with you. Some states require specific documentation when flying, Health certificates within 10 days before each flight, all vaccination certificates, certificates stating he is free of fleas and ticks...there are more, but it just depends on the airlines and states you will be flying to. Your best bet would be to call or check all the airlines websites regarding traveling with pets and see what your options are.
