Q: What is the best way to keep area around litter box tidy?

April 3, 2008 | By Brenda P. | 13 answers | Expired: 2358 days ago

I live in an apartment and unfortuneatly the only place to put the litter box is in a carpeted room. I am worried about keeping the carpet clean with the cat kicking litter out of the box. Any suggestions?

You can try an enclosed litter box, but honestly no matter what they seem to get some litter on the carpet. My suggestion to get an enclosed litter box may help some. Try getting a plastic mat with edges to put just in the front of it. My cat has really fuzzy paws and the litter is like a magnet. It just sticks. Some people like the Pearl like litter too. Less of a mess. It really depends on your cat. My cat will not tolerate a closed litter box or anything that feels undesirable under her feet. Having a matt down helps.

I have placed an astroturf (the thick kind) "welcome" mat, sized a little larger, under the litter box. The litter goes into the fake "grass" and "holds it". I then every few days take the mat out and shake it to get rid of the collected litter. Hope this helps!

I use a puppy pad underneath my cat's litter box. There are also special brush like mats that help pick up the litter when it is kicked out. My cat is really messy, I use a covered box and everything. If not, she would knock the whole thing over in the floor.
