What is the best way to house train a dog? I have tried everything I can think of and nothing really seems to work.

(I do appreciate everyones answers so far, but all the answers that don't involve crates, i've tried, and my dog is too big for a crate)

I make her stay in the bathroom (it's not too big, it is kinda kind putting her in a crate) when i am not here and give her toys and a bed in there. Sometimes, she will do okay, and other times, she just pees on her bed, and still lays in it, and poops where ever, and then steps all in it and smears it all over everything in my bathroom. I take her out plenty of times a day, and right before i leave, and i feed her in the evening when im there.
I have tried praising her, and giving her treats for going outside, and tired puppy pads, which do nothing at all, she doesnt even go near them. When she DOES go in the bathroom, i clean it up, and make her stay in there for being bad, and if she didnt go in there, i let her out when im home. I just really have no idea what to do with her.

The first thing you have to do is get your dog on a feeding schedule. If she eats the same time everyday she should go poo around the same time everyday. Feed her breakfast. If she doesn't finish in a reasonable amount of time, pick it up. Repeat this routine in the evening. She should need to poo anytime within the hour(usually). Only give her small nibbles of treat and only when she does what you want her to do. Next, stop giving her water about 1-1 1/2 hrs before you put her in the bathroom. Is she drinking from the toilet? If so your wet problem is going to continue. You use the bathroom as your crate. The same rules apply as those for crate training. Dog goes in bed. Dog comes out of bed straight to potty area outside. Tell her "go potty" everytime you put her out. If the dog doesn't go it goes straight back to bed. Try again in 1/2hr. No potty then repeat till she goes. If she goes potty love her, play with her, give her a treat, leave her out with you for about an hour. Then back outside and back to bed for awhile. Repeat these steps over and over till she gets it. You should start this when you know you will be home for a couple of days. Someone else said it takes time. And it does. But if you follow these steps she should be house trained in less than a month. Good luck!

REPITITION AND A SCHEDULE. THE DOG GOES IN THE HOUSE(YOU SEE IT GO IN THE HOUSE) SAY NO AND TAKE THE DOG OUT. IT'S THAT SIMPLE JUST DO IT CONSTANTLY THE SAME WAY. MAKE SURE YOU ARE TAKING THE DOG OUT AFTER MEALS AFTER DRINKING AFTER SLEEPING

my cousin and her husband used puppy training pads to train their boxer. how the breeder/previous owner raised and trained the dog factors in, but vega was "pad trained" in a week. i do not suggest crate training. i don't suggest crating or confining pets for any reason. but for me, the crate especially didn't work for me when i had my english cocker spaniel because the breeder taught the dogs to go in their bed so she'd relieve herself whenever we crated her.

I think the best way to house train a dog is by crate training the dog. Some people think crate training is awful, but dogs actually like having a place that is theirs and feels like a den. My dog will go to his crate if he feels scared or wants to be left alone for a little while.
To house train using the crate, take your dog outside. If the dog goes potty, he gets to come back into the house and be with the family. But if the dog doesn't go (and you're fairly certain he needs to), then bring him back inside, but put him in his crate. A little while later, get the dog and take him out again and start the process all over again.
Putting the dog in the crate is not punishment. Dogs will typically not defecate where they have to sleep, so you are teaching the dog to hold it until he goes outside.
Hope this helps!

Hi Christa I think the best way to train a dog is whenever they go outside praise them and give them a treat..Also just incase make sure that they go out plenty times a day..If the do go in the house then you should take them rub their noses in it..not to long and yell at them then take them outside for awhile..if you do have a cage then once you let them back in the house put them right in their cage and don't let them out for about 30 minute..Hope this helped, good luck

Crate training is the best way, keep your dog in a crate big enough to stand up and turn around in at nite, during the day put him/her in for rest periods, alway take your puppy out after eating, playing and give them lots of praise when they relieve themselves outside. I've crate trained my last 3 dogs and within two weeks they got the idea.
