I am getting a new puppy. I was just wondering what the best puppy food is. My older dog is on Nutro Senior.

There is no "best" dog food, everyone will say something different..You need to do some research and pick what will work for your and your dog. Generally speaking, the fewer ingredients the better and a meat source should be in the top three (especially for puppies), also look for foods that have a mark stating that the ingredients are "humane grade" if you are truly looking for high quality. Many dogs live happy, long healthy lives being fed "supermarket" food..though one of the "best" side effect to the higher quality, the easier to digest which means less mess for you to pick up after...dogs should only go poo no more than how many times per day they are fed..the higher quality the less times and size.

I had my mini schnauzer and chow mix on Science Diet puppy food. It was smaller pieces and they both seemed to really like it.

I'm not sure if it is the "BEST" however we feed all of our dogs, puppies and adults Purina Puppy Chow. We have a couple working farm dogs and then we have our lap dogs, everyone is very healthy and their skin and coats are all in good condition. We like it because it helps keep weight on the farm dogs as well as keeps our lap dogs looking great too without becoming obese.

I'm not sure about puppies but I do know they need something with high protein. I know Taste of the Wild is great for dogs so if they have a puppy version that might be good. Talk to you vet or employees at pet stores. I go to Petco and they are super knowledgable about the different dog foods.

Canidae makes an All Life Stages food that you can start feeding now and continue to feed throughout your puppy's life -- my pups are doing great on it! Wellness Puppy that someone else mentioned is also excellent. Steer clear of low-quality filler-full foods like the SD and Iams someone else suggested, that stuff is just like feeding McDonald's everyday.

Good luck, and congrats on the new pup!

My pups have been eating Wellness Puppy food since we adopted them. They love it, are strong, healthy, active and their coats SHINE! Great food. I have converted most of the other pets in the house to Wellness also.

Feed anything that is all natural, meaning there are no by-products, which can be anything not fit for human consumption. Brands that list meat by-products on the label use euthanized cats and dogs, diseased cattle, dead farm animals, roadkill, etc. Some of the brands mentioned already are all natural, such as Merrick. Iams is one of those brands that uses meat by-products, so I would stay away from it. If Nutro is all natural, that would be a good one, too. You can get all natural brands in some pet foods stores, and Petco now sells Wellness.

Nutro or Iams have great puppy food. Make sure you feed the amount recommended on the bag and get the right kind - large breed, small breed, etc.

Nutro Natural Choice is good, just make sure if its a large breed you feed large breed puppy food. You can tell a good food by the texture of your dog's coat after you've been feeding for about a week. We buy Merrick brand dry food when we can get it on sale, it does wonders for my pit bull's skin and coat, which is usually pretty dry. Its expensive tho.
