Q: What does it mean when a cat pats you with their paw

April 23, 2009 | By Jamie242 | 13 answers | Expired: 1992 days ago

My cat would sit on a perch and I'll pet him and when I stop, he'll reach at me with his paw. Or he'll pat my face when I'm holding him

My cat Mason (he passed away) use to pat my leg with his paw when he wanted me to pet him. When I would stop he would tap it again until HE was finished being petted. He would do it to others too when he wanted them to pet him. I think animals do it as another way to communicate with us. My new kitty Sophie rolles on her back when she wants me to pet her belly. They are all different like us and they all have different ways of talking to us.

My cat does this an when he does it is because he doesn't want us to stop petting him. Work for him every time. He is spoiled rotten just like the rest of my animals.

one of my cats does this and it always happens when i'm not petting her. i think its her way of saying, "i want you to do this."
cats can't talk so they devise ways of letting us know what they want.

This is a way to show you that you belong to them, also cats are not stupid, they love your attention and will ask you for it in this way! You should feel lucky that your cat owns you, and loves you so much!!

I asked a Zookeeper about this question, because I was wondering this for so long myself! I was told that when they pet your face it means ownership, and it is also their way of communicating affection to you! Hope this helps! This is a very good question! : )

My two year old Maine Coon cat, Goldie, does the same thing. I believe it means she is enjoying the attention and does not want you to stop petting her. I think it is cute and hope she never stops dong it!!

The cat either just wants to pet you or wants more attention.
