Q: What do you suggest for dog allergies?

December 3, 2008 | By Zootooelj | 20 answers | Expired: 2136 days ago

My dog (part Rhodesian Ridgeback?) has allergies and is very itchy. She seems to get better as the weather gets colder. What products do you suggest? Thanks!

My dog had such bad allergies, Mozart had to have blood work done. He had allergies to quite a few things. He went on medication and the problem was solved. He never had a problem after that.

My Buddy has sever itching problems. He is on prescribed steroids and meds that are the same as benedryl, just prescription. He also has prescribed shampoo and conditioner but I also use oatmeal shampoo. Natural Balance L.I.D. is good for dogs with allergies because of the limited ingredients. Good Luck!

My male boston terrier had allergies very bad when he was younger. We used oatmeal shampoo and we also feed our dogs Nutro Max. It doesn't have the same fillers that less inexpensive brands have. A steriod spray for their itchy spots works well too.

My old dog suffered the same - itchiness that did not seem as bad during cold weather. After changing vets - the new one suggested it might be food related and change to food with no wheat or corn. At that time I went with a high quality lamb and rice food with no wheat or corn. Within just 3-4 days he stopped scratching. And the rest of his life he had very few problems with allergies.

As for my latest beast - right now I am feeding him Harmony Farms. And he seems to be doing well on it and likes it. There is also Newman's Organic Dog food. A friend feeds it to her dog and they are happy with it.

good luck

If allergies are seasonal (and not food related), you can give your dog Benedryl! I use it summer to fall. My pittie has terrible allergies and ends up with secondary skin infections as a result. You can give dogs a higher dose than people. Preston is 73 lbs. and he gets 3 in the am, 3 in the pm (before bed) and if he's really bad 2 more during the day (all per veterinary instruction).

We changed our dogs food to Nutro lamb and rice and give him a fish oil pill daily(not from China) and he had been good for years now. Each dog is different and find a food that he/she has not had like fish and potatoes. There are tons of options today. My trainer believes in using a raw diet. It is more work, but all of her 8 dogs are fine too. Good luck!
