Q: What do you do to entertain your pet?

When you are away for long periods of time during the day, do you do anything special for your dog? Are there things I can do to help keep him occupied and happy while I am gone?

When I had my dog we got him one of those balls with treats that come out the more he plays with it. He use to love it.

I hide frozen Kongs for my dogs to hunt and find. I put a variety of things in the kongs, like: mashed banana, liverwurst, wet dog food, yogurt, cottage cheese, peanut butter, baby food and cream cheese. I layer the food with the yummiest, smelliest at the bottom so that they don't give up. My dogs can't wait for me to go to work!

When I leave my dogs for an extended time, I usually get them a bone or pig's ear from the butcher shop. This is the only time that they get them and they are happy to go find a place to chew on them for a while. The bones last longer. It also makes it easier for me to leave when they are happy instead of looking at the car with this "look of abandonment"

I leave the radio on, arrange for a dog walker and give him a kong stuffed with frozen food(takes longer to get out - I make them up in advance a leave them in the freezer for the week)

I put on some soft music or the tv for my dogs. They also have a bunch of toys to play with too.

I'm sure it's different with dogs than with guinea pigs, like I have, but I've found the most important thing is to rotate toys and objects in their cage so it's constantly a new experience for them. I have assorted PVC pipes I put in the cages and they act like they are entering something new for the first time as I change them. The same can be said for dog toys, TV on or off, talk radio, music, moving a dog bed around, opening or closing curtains, etc. I think it's the variety of things that keep animals amused.

Classical music and chew toys. Luckily he entertains himself by sleeping in a leather chair by a sunny window where he can keep one eye open for deer and stray cats.

I leave toys out that they can play with by themselves. The One toy is like a cicle with a mouse inside it and it like spins around when the cat paws it. I also leave out the cat cube with lots of mice all over.

I walk my dogs in the mornings to tire them out and then have special chew toys they only get while I am gone. I also leave the radio on a soft music station.
