Q: What do you do for a dog with anxiety about riding in the car?
My dog loves to be with us, but if we take him in the car he pants, shakes and won't lay down the whole time. He doesn't want to be left behind especially if his sister is going in the car yet he's so uneasy. Has anyone heard of the vest that is supposed to help w/ anxiety? If so, anyone out there have one and does it do the job of calming them down? I tried the all natural drops and chewable pill, but it didn't work at all.

I haven't heard of the vest you mentioned; I do know there are some things the vet can give for anxiety. The only other thing I can think of is doing desensitization. If your dog is anxious from the moment he gets in the car, start with just getting in and out of the car, move to sitting in the car for longer periods, then to the car moving a short distance and increase the distance over time. If he is not anxious until the car is moving, this is where I would start. Lots of praise and some treats when your dog does well so he associates something positive with the car. An animal behavioralist may have some ideas, too. Good luck!

I have an Italian Greyhound that also is the same way, he cries and shakes the whole time in anticipation of where we might be going. What we have found that helps is to not console the behavior, if we ignore him, his anxiety lessens and the calmness of my other 3 dogs eventually relaxes him. Good luck though with the vest if you use it, let us know if it works!
