They are not a color but a pattern the pattern is striped.

tabby's come in lots of colors, mostly orange or brown. but they can come in numerous colors. I had one that was orange, and a friend with a brown one. Also I think "tabby" refers to they kind of cat, meaning, size, ear shape and different things like that

Tabby isn't a color but a pattern. If a cat has stripes, it is a tabby. All tabbies have thin lines on the face, expressive markings around the eyes, and a tabby "M" on the forehead. If you look closely at the light parts of their fur, you'll see that the individual hairs are striped (called "agouti"). Tabbies come in all colors except white. The tabby patterns may be extremely faint in blue & black tabbies.

There are four basic tabby patterns:
* Classic tabby - defined by prominent swirling patterns on the cat's sides (think two colors of paint swirled together but not mixed)
* Mackerel tabby - defined by narrow stripes that run parallel down the sides (referred to as the tiger kitty)
* Spotted tabby - defined by large and/or small spots on its body
* Ticked tabby - No stripes or spots on its body but has the markings on its face & the agouti hairs on its body

Tabbies mostly have "tiger" stripes....they are not a solid color. Stormy is a tabby!

Meow! There could be many types of tabby...the most common I come across at the shelter I volunteer at are mackeral and bullseye tabbys....Mackeral are distinguished by their dark stripes (could be any color such as orange or gray) and bulleye tabbys are distinguished by a circle around their abdomen.

From the "Free Dictionary" online:
A tabby is a cat with a distinctive coat that features stripes, dots, or swirling patterns. Tabbies are often mistakenly assumed to be a breed of cat. In fact, the tabby pattern is a naturally occurring feature that may be the original coloration of the domestic cat's distant ancestors. Tabby coloration is found in many breeds of cat, as well as among the general 'moggy' (mixed-breed or mongrel) population. When cats are allowed to breed randomly, the coloration of the population tends toward brown mackerel tabbies with green eyes, leading geneticists to believe that this is the common wild phenotype of the domestic cat. The tabby usually has an "M" mark on its forehead.

Actually, Tabby can have many more patterns than stripes. Here's the best site I've seen showing what makes a tabby:

Domestic American Tabby is a breed of cat, not a color. They can be organge, yellow, grey or black striped. It just means they have stripes.

Tabby means it has darker stripes on whatever color your cat's coat is

Like they said, it's just the stripes in the cat's fur... the color doesn't really make a difference.
