Q: What can WE do about pet limits in apartments and mobile home parks?
I was in this situation once, years ago, & had no choice but to take 2 dogs to the local humane society because I went thru divorce & had no choice but to buy a cheap mobile home. I was aloud only one pet. (I kept Emmy). Why are WE allowing them to run our lives like this? Is there anything WE can do to change this private policy??? Who knows, I might end up in this same situation again. Hope not!
Cindy, You said it...a way to prove ourselves responsible pet owners. Why can't they let us do that? How could we possibly get that through their heads? Maybe a 2 month probationary period and get good/bad reports from neighbors. I think I would do that if I were a landlord.
Thank you all for your interesting answers!
I've heard on the news that shelters are filling up do to foreclosures but one of the reasons is...they've had to revert to renting where the landowner's do not accept pets. It isn't neccesarily because they can't afford to feed & care for their animals. This is terrible! The've already lost so much but then, to have get rid of their animals too???? Some people just don't understand!!

This is a good question. We moved to the townhouse community we live in now because pets are allowed here. When we moved in I had two dogs and one cat. I never let the cat out and followed the leash laws and always cleaned up after the dogs. Most of the people who live here are just like me and are responsible pet owners.
Now the down side of this. My next door neighbor moved in about 18 months ago and has a large aggressive dog that she lets run loose when she thinks nobody is looking. It has scared the daylights out of an older lady who was trying to get her mail. It attacked my old Danny Boy in our own garage when we were returning from a walk and there have been lots of other incidents like this. It actually bit one neighbor on the ankle but she didn't report it so there was nothing done. Most of the neighbors now walk with Direct Stop spray. I've had to use it twice on this dog. It has made me understand why dogs are banned in so many places and why only small dogs are allowed. The police and animal control have been called but they can't do anything unless they catch the dog outside off leash. The owner is very crafty and has been able to fool the authorities.
It is a bad problem and it may cause the community board to do the thing I don't want done which is ban dogs. It is this one bad owner which may ruin it for all the nice people and dogs who live here.
I am on the board and will not vote for a pet ban and will argue against it, but if people are not able to walk outside comfortably I may lose the fight. I am sure that when pets are banned or limited there is a reason and there is probably little or nothing that can be done to change those rules. I am very glad you don't have to live anywhere like that anymore.

I can cetainly understand your frustration. I've never been a home owner but had pets the last 10 years and have had to move around constantly so I know what a struggle it is to find apartments, townhomes, ect that allow pets. I think it is so discouraging and its sad because a lot of irresponsible pet owners ruin it for others. I know as an owner I would be reluctant to allow pets because I've seen how some pet owners let their pets completely trash their house! I wish there was a way to prove yourself as a responsible pet owner to landlords so they could ease up on this a bit maybe. Its so hard to find places that allow pets as it is.
