Q: What can we do about our 9 year old cat urinating and defecating on the floor?

Emily is 9. She insists on using the bottom of the stair hallway in the basement for her bathroom. There are 2 litter boxes down there--kept clean. We are at wit's end . How do we correct this most upsetting habit.?

There are a few different reasons I can think of as to why your cat is continuing to urinate somewhere other than her litterbox.

Do you have more than one cat? Sometimes cats do not like to share a box, so they take their business elsewhere. She may find the boxes she is using too small also.

Your cat could be rejecting the litter you use. Some cats use the clumping sand like litter whereas other cats use pellet like litter.

Also, depending on what you clean the urine stains with, your cat may be encouraged to use the same spot. Some cleaners contain ammonia, which is found in urine/feces, and that attracts the animal to the spot again. I recommend a cleaner like Simple Solution that cuts out the stain and smell without using ammonia.

It never hurts to tell your vet what your cat's behaviors are, because it could be a sign of an illness or infection. I hope this helps you and your cat.

Take her to the vet. My Parker had struvite crystals and starting urinating IN the tub, sink, or on the cold marble floor. If she's been good about using the litter box and all of a sudden she's not, chances are she has an infection. Get her in right away--infections can be very, very serious.

I heard when they start getting old and sick they start going to the bathroom in wierd places. You should take her to the vet.
