Q: What Can I Feed My Mature Cat To Gain Weight?
I leave food and water out for my cat, Spookie. I also give him a can of wet food a week sometimes twice a week. He is 12 years old and though he isn't boney I would like to put a little bit of weight on him. What is the easiest and healthiest way to do this? Spookie has had his yearly exam and the vet told me there really wasn't anything I could do differently to help with the weight gain except for allowing him to have more soft food. His dental exam checked out fine for his age of course and he does eat his hard food fine. I just wish there was something out there to help fatten him up.

As Michele said, you can check calorie count on the dry foods & find one with a few more calories. Also, I give mine canned food every day. They get a little in the morning & in the evening & then I free feed them dry food. With my senior cat, I sometimes give her extra servings of canned food throughout the day to help her maintain her weight. She does have health issues & is on a prescription food, but I still feed her like I feed the others with some extra feedings thrown in.

Has your 12-year-old cat had a dental exam? It is possible that he is having difficulty eating hard, dry food. If you haven't done so recently, I'd suggest that you get Spookie a dental exam to rule out a problem. In the meantime, you could offer more soft/canned food to your aging cat.
