Q: What are the laws on monkey ownership?

they vary by state, county, and municipality. Most areas ban primate ownership, and for good reason... all simian species are quite difficult to properly care for, and usually get quite aggressive.

Last summer we had a "rash" (read: 2) monkey "attacks" (read: bites) in Columbia, MO. One even made Comedy Central Stephen Colbert show! Please research ALL that you can (not just the laws in your area) BEFORE you get a monkey. If you're set on getting a monkey, please check with rescues... there are many that take in abandoned/unwanted exotic animals. I bet calling a rescue to see what kind of care they need would be one of the best ideas as well. People who work directly with the animals often have a different perspective than those that do not.

They do not make good pets, and it is very unfair to keep one, they belong in the wild doing what they want and living within their group, people wanting exotic pets are usually crying out for attention.
