What are the Black Spots on his Tongue?

We have a 4 year old male Golden Retriever. He has large black spots on his tongue. The vet says not to worry they are just "pigment". I was just curious if anyone else's dog had the same thing.

I have a Golden Retriever mix that also has some black areas on her tongue. They actually look more like dark purple to me. Chow Chows are a breed that have their entire tongues this color so I thought that my mix may have some Chow in her. The vet told me he didn't think she had Chow in her and said that all types of dogs can have this pigmentation on their tongue.

Chows and Shar Peis both have solid dark tongues. Other breeds might also. Your dogs ancesters may have been mixed with one ot the other.

Aunty,
I know Murphy is 100% retriever, the spots are not Chow chow because chows have purple just like Miah. It is probably pigment but I too have wondered because Leena has them on her gums. I will google it and get back to you
