I would like to buy a reasonably priced Australian stock saddle. Does anyone have any opinions on the best quality name brands?

I can give you some names of the ones I've heard of, such as Tucker and Stocksman. But the best saddle is the one that fits your horse.

A great way to measure fit is to use a piece of wire, lay it aross his withers, and form it to his back shape. Lay this out on a piece of cardboard, trace it, and cut it out. Repeat this process 4" back from the withers, and again 4" back from that, and one more time, 4" back from that. If you stand these pieces on end, in order on a flat surface, you will see the shape of your horse's back. These cardboard pieces you can carry with you when you go shopping. Check for full spine clearance, and level fit along the bars of the tree. Don't forget to check fit with the saddle pad against the saddle too.

We did this for my husband's gelding and it worked great! Hope you find a saddle that works for you.

Good luck!
