Q: What are symptoms of my dog having a bowel obstruction

My dog had a fecal impaction today. she has been bearing down like she was trying to have a bowel movement. On the outside of her butt she had a very formed stool. i dont know if she will have to have surgery for a obstruction or a intesseption ...

It may be that you dog has impacted anal galnds, which can make it very difficult to pass stool. Depending on how badly compacted the stool, surgery may need to be done. X-rays can tell how bad the situation is. I hope you dog gets better soon!

First, your vet will check the anal glands..if they are impacted, the vet can release the impaction with a gloved finger...don't stand too close b/c the odor will knock you down! If it's not the anal glands causing the problem, the next best thing to do is get an x-ray as opposed to an enema b/c the latter can cause more harm depending on where the impaction is. Laxatives can also be used if warranted. Last resort is surgery..especially if the bowel begins to die or if an object is stuck somewhere along the GI tract. Have the vet assess your dog first before making yourself crazy with the 'what-ifs'. Good luck to your doggie!

it may be just a case of costipation. i would call the vt and see what he says he may say bring her i or tell you to give her some sort of stool softener. good luck i hope it is just costpatio
