My own rule when doing fundraisers is to keep expenses low - the less you spend, the more you give to your charity. Garage sales are wonderful fundraisers - one we held two years ago raised over $1300 in a single morning. Be sure to take advantage of any free publicity that's available (community calendars, news media, etc.) Also, set up donation cans so people who don't want to buy items can still donate to the cause.

Good luck!
