as fate would have it, I will be heading back east to Ohio (from nevada) on the 20th of this month. If you look at my 'zoo' page you will see who is making the trip with me. They will ALL come back with me!
my problem is with King...he is terrified of riding in cars, i've tried working with getting him in and out with the help of my smaller dog Sobriole. He does ok (not great) but once the engine starts he freaks.
this trip will be over 2000+ miles! I've got a 25'standard RV i'm renting for the occassion to make it more like a 'home' for my pets, hoping king will be ok.
Does anyone know what would be a good sedative to calm my King? Would a small amount of 'dramamine' work on him? He weighs around 75 pounds (rough guess).
I don't want this to be the worse trip of a lifetime for him.

don't give dramamine, but benadryl is ok in a small quantity. You will deffinately want to ask your vet. Also,if he is crate trained, that would be the best place for him during the trip. That way he does not move around a lot, or get hurt. He will also fell secure, and if he gets car sick, it will be in a designated place

I recently had to travel from Ohio to Washington with my cat Noel, who is also terrified of car rides. The vet recommended that I give her benadryl, and it seemed to help a little bit, but it also made her foam at the mouth and drool everyhere, so I would try it first at home to see if the effect is worth the mess. It wasn't in our case. I also got an herbal calming syrup from petco (they were out of Bach's [which my vet recommended highly])which was sticky but helpful and didnt seem to upset the cat as much as the benedryl. We had a 4 day car trip and I will say that after the first 24 hours or so Noel began to get used to the car ride, and she didnt need the medicine anymore. Yes, she was still really grateful to get out of the car every night at the hotel, but she didnt seem as distressed as she started out. Hope this helps, and good luck!
