Q: Toy help?
My dog, Ginger, is approx. 1 1/2 yr old. I've had her for almost a year and I've been trying to get her to play with toys. She'll run after a tennis or soccer ball but then when she smells it she'll leave it alone and be on her way. I found out that she will pick up fruit like an apple or a peach and play keep away and she'll play tug-of-war with an old cloth or t-shirt but I can't get her to play with anything else. She's still a puppy (but a huge one at that) and I really want her to have something to keep her occupied while I'm living in my dorm and my parents are at work during the day. I've tried Kongs, but she shows no interest whatsoever. Also, I've tried squeaky toys. She looks at you whenever you squeak it, but she just gives them to the neighborhood dogs.

what you can do is hold the ball, or whatever toy you'd like to use, and give her a treat just by touching it w/her nose. during this time, teach the word "ball" or "toy" as shes touching it. do this for a little while and then withhold treats until she uses her mouth. to get her to use her mouth, use the toy to gently tap her nose. chances are, she'll mouth it and then you treat and tell her how good she is. keep doing this, only treating when she uses her mouth and she'll get the hang of it. if you taught the commands, you'll be able to send her to get her toy whenever you want.
