Q: Tough Toys

I have bought many many many toys for my dog that claim to be indestructible and I have yet to find one that my dog does not destroy within MINUTES! I have tried a range of Kongs, firehouses, and hard plastic ones. Any suggestions??

Our dog has the same problem. We can't keep a toy for longer than 5 minutes. The toy that has last the longest for us is the knuckle bone. It has to be a white knuckle bone. He likes the toy and it seems to work the best. He also likes soccer balls. He doesn't really chew on it since it doesn't fit in his mouth. It has deflated over the months but hasn't popped yet.

First my 2 one year olds destroyed a red kong. Got them a black kong. That lasted 1 hour. In the house nylabones seem to last the longest, at least a couple of months. Outside they play with tires. Everything from racing slicks to motorcycle tires. My sons dog ate the whole side off the slick, but it took him a year! I also take old t- shirts or jeans, cut them in large strips, braid them with knots on the ends and they use them to tug toys.

My dogs can chew through walls and Kongs are ok with them. If they are trashing kongs, you have some problems. Try only giving the kongs when they are stuffed with peanut butter. (Freeze them first) or marrow bones from the butcher. Take them away shortly after the marrow is all gone. Good luck!!!

How about a bowling ball? Destroying toys is probably Bam's only "fault". He loves to play with other dogs. How about a playmate? He wouldn't destroy them. Ask Sherri about Yogi, or Floie.

Only toy my Jinger, the extreme chewer didn't wreck was EXTREME KONG. Everything else didn't last at all. We had so many stufed animal we couold giveher to wreck, but I did not like stuffed animals because my friends dog got bowel obstruction from eating the fillings of stuffed animal. So please do not give yor precious dog te stuffed animals made for human use.

My dog is the same way and the one toy that has lasted is this blue hard plastic ball that has holes in it and has a soft, small squeaky ball in the middle. I'm not sure of the name off hand but you can buy it at Petco & Petsmart in different sizes. I can leave it with him all day long and he hasn't been able to ruin it at all months later. At first he was obsessive with it and we had to stage an intervention to take it away, but even now he still will play with it for hours.

Nothing lasts long so I go to garage sales and buy stuffed animals for a quarter. Check to be sure they don't contain the pellets. I get the softer, fiberfill ones - put them thru the washer and then give them to the dogs. I often stitch them up and wash them when the dogs have torn them some and get a little more life out of them. But you don't mind having a quarter toy torn up. I buy lots when I find them for a dime but quite a few at a quarter even and save them for winter when garage sales aren't going.
