I don't have a dog but when I first brought one of my cats in the car for a trip, he freaked. Hyperventilated and all. I got a mild tranquilizer from the vet. I gave it to my cat before we got in the car and he was calm all the way...slept too. But the good thing is, after two times giving the tranquilizer and a ride in the car, my cat did not need it anymore. He was "desensitized." He identified riding in the car with calmness w/o the tranquilizer.
