One of my cat paws at both the water and the food bowls before she eats or drinks. I was told once that it is a sign of intelligence.

My cat, Kate, used to do that. When she was younger, she would knead the ground before she drank. I caught her doing it again not long ago though. When cats do this, they are thinking they are drinking milk from their mother.

My 3rd cat does it when she's eating sometimes--- takes a bit, paws around in a circle, takes another bite, paws around-- it's hilarious.

13 out of my 15 cats do this when they want to drink water. I believe they are trying to create a ripple in the water so they can see where the water level is before sticking their face in the water. My other 2 cats actually take their paw and slap the water in the bowl to create the ripple.
There is nothing wrong with you cat and this is a purrfectly normal thing for a cat to do. NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT!!!!

Boy am I glad other peoples' cats do that. Both our blond boys look like they are trying to bury the water fountains before they drink from them.

One of my guinea pigs does it when I give her a treat. She lowers her head and stretches out her front legs and digs and then she straightens up and eats her snack. I thought she might just be excited to see the snack...she's the only one I've ever had that has done it.

Cats have scent glands in their paws & they use them to mark their territory. Its possible they do this to leave their scent in the place they're about to drink, either marking it for future reference or to warn other animals that this spot is taken - just some leftover instinctual behavior that's programmed into their genetics from back when it was necessary for their survival. Some of my cats do this. Those instincts are stronger in some cats than others.

My girls tap the water with their paws before drinking. I think that they do it because they want to make sure that it is good enough for their tastes. If it isn't cool enough they want it refilled. I think that your cats may just be showing that they are happy and the pawing is a kneading behavior
