I just came across a listing where a pet owner wants to rehome his/her bunny because it refuses to get out of its cage and walk on a wooden floor. I was just curious as to other stupid reasons you've heard from people giving up their pets. Care to share so that the rest of us can shake our heads in discust?

there was an article i read online a while back about a shelter in England and some of the goofy excuses people have given for getting rid of their pets. one person wanted to get rid of their cat because it did not match their new carpet.

we're actually dealing with this issue with my brother-in-law right now. a couple of months ago a couple of puppies wandered up to our building, one a black lab, the other a chocolate lab. they brought the black lab to animal control and kept the chocolate lab. they never ran a "found" ad though they did let animal control know about the chocolate and they kept an eye on "lost" ads. they never found the owner and decided to keep it. now, mind you, my brother-in-law and his wife have a toddler, live in a small 2-bedroom apartment, and already get "government assistance" so they can afford to live and feed their kid. we tried to talk sense into them, we really did, but no "we've had dogs before! you think we don't know what we're doing? we can afford it, we've had puppies before"...

...now, just a couple of months later, they've come to the shocking realization that they have a large, destructive, high-energy puppy that they don't have the space, time, attention, or money for. this poor dog...she's only about 8 months old, and she's already been through so much. we're trying desperately to find a good home for her before they do something really stupid with her. see, they seem to be of the opinion that since they've realized that they can't handle the puppy, they should only have to do the absolute bare minimum (if that) as far as caring for her.

ok...rant over. sometimes my "family" makes me sick.

So they call it "rehoming" now, instead of "getting rid of". Power in words.

There is no good reason to rehome a pet. I got one of my dogs from a lady who said she was moving and could take the dog along with her cat to the new place. The dog was a little on the wild side and not well behaved so I think she just never took the time to care for her. Its a rat terrier who she said she kept her chained up outside most of the time.

I want a black one....

I actually overheard someone bringing in a Yellow Tabby to the adoption center because they wanted a Black one....

Needless to say they did not get to adopt, at least at this shelter on this day!

I think the majority of reasons to give a pet away are stupid. We're moving and can't keep it. Duh, move where you CAN keep it. If I can do it, you can too.

I heard one couple say they were having a baby and want to get rid of the dog in case the baby is allergic. They were dumping the dog just in case of allergies.

I think it's stupid when they use the excuse they got sick of the animal or didn't anticipate all the responsibility. Do your research and you won't have that problem. That's my opinion.
