Q: Stupid Reasons People Rehome Their Pets

I just came across a listing where a pet owner wants to rehome his/her bunny because it refuses to get out of its cage and walk on a wooden floor. I was just curious as to other stupid reasons you've heard from people giving up their pets. Care to share so that the rest of us can shake our heads in discust?

We had a surrender at our shelter that was a beautiful long haired black cat and the excuse was "Husband and wife are getting divorced and neither of us want the cat". Are you kidding me?!

Our shelter rescued an FIV+ tabby named Rodney that was kept in a cage for 2 years of his life because the VET OFFICE was afraid of having it around other cats. Someone payed for the cat and found the resources to bring it to our shelter. We have an FIV+ room and definitely believe these cats are adoptable, and we've had a lot of success with it. Any INFORMED vet would know that as long as an FIV+ cat isn't aggressive, there is minimal chance of it being transferred to another cat. You can't get it, dogs can't get it, cats can't give it to each other from eating from the same bowls or using the same litter box. It's only from deep bite wounds from fighting. Rodney is the most friendliest cat ever, and loved his new freedom at the shelter, where we keep cats in open rooms. He didn't fight at all. And the best part is, he found a new "forever" home, instead of living in a cage. You would think vets of all people would be the most updated on the FIV+ topic. That story just shocked me when I heard it. But hooray for Rodney!

I have to say I think one of the most used excuses is "I am allergic." I saw an ad, someone getting rid of a 3 year old lab that they'd had since a puppy and they said they were all of a sudden allergic. Yay right!

Anyways, before you get ANY pet, please be prepared and aware of the time and responsibility they take. Animals are NOT just discarable.

i just saw this on cragislist: I have a female calico kitten that I need to rehome. She is very sweet, and very playful. We got her and love her, but I have afraid that my 18 month old is going to hurt her. He is very very grabby and she is so afraid of him.

how about you control your damn kid & teach him how to behave around animals? you obviously dont love her enough to keep her & work with your kid

One time a client called our office to have a pet removed from her file because the dog got 10# bigger that she wanted. it was a chihuahua, and the breeder said it wouldn't get over 5#,and it grew to be 15# so they got rid of it after they had it from a puppy for the last 1 1/2 years!! Idiots

Read this one on craigslist just earlier this week. Rehoming dog because we are putting in a pool and we won't be able to keep him out of it. Duh, maybe you could put a fence around the pool?

I've known people to get rid of their adult dog to get a new puppy! How sad.

The baby excuse is ridiculous, and makes me so angry.

The moving excuse is way overused, and usually just pure lazyness. Disgusting.

The animal looks evil.

The the pet doesn't match the decor.

The dog never barks.

The cat won't meow.

The animal was too nice to guard the house.

The animal did not alert me when my phone rings or someone is at the door.

It got too big.

It's now too old.

when we adopted my aunts hound dog from animal control they told us that she had been adopted & brought back... the reason was... she wouldnt stop scratching on the door to come into the house... no keep in mind, this shelter will not allow an animal to be adopted with being fixed... when they brought her back to the shelter, they found that the stitches from her being fixed had never been removed & where being grown over... the reason she was scratching @ the door to come in was because of a terrible storm that we had... poor thing was scared to death... now Dolly Girl is happy as can be, sleeps in the bed with her mom, dad & sister, has a 1/2 ferel cat who will play with her & comes to my house for play dates with her "cousins"...
