Q: starved stray cat is protective over our food dish and wont let our cats eat
theres a stray white female cat that is starving ,probably has worms ,and is feeding kittens, that we have been feeding for a while. but she started hanging around more and now shes protective over our food and she wont let our cats eat. and when she eats she eats it all and goes for more. i dont want to scare her off because i feel sorry for her but my cats need too eat too.

I am assuming that your cats are outdoors? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, after taking care of feral cats,I have realized that you have to be very careful allowing your pets anywhere near them, because you don't know if this stray is infected with anything.
I was shocked with some of my strays because they looked fine, but turned out positive for FeL V(Feline Leukemia Virus)
Truthfully,I just wouldn't let your cats in the same vicinity as long as your helping this cat.
Is it possible for you to catch her and get her to your local shelter?

If she had babies she will need more food, and you are right she might have worms. I would just give food in another spot away from your cats. There is no need to separate the cats if your cats are outside, they probably have contact with other cats anyway. I would get her fixed so she will not have any more kittens. If she is friendly I would get her into a shelter after she weens her kittens and they are about 4+ month old. If you have time and know where the kittens are you can try to domesticate them. If the mom is not friendly or feral I would let her be and just get her fixed. If you bring feral cat into a shelter all they will do is kill her. Also be careful about testing for FIV as those tests are only 50/50 accurate.
