Q: Smelly cat poo

Anyone have ideas on why a kitten's poo would smell really strong? We are using Iams kitten food, and the kitten has access to water. Maybe it is a normal kitten thing. Thanks for any comments

The parasite Travis is thinking of is Giardia. Also hookworms will make a foul smelling odor!

Purina Kitten Chow is great for kittens - you can add water to it and it makes a milk gravy.

To save on money, you can take a feces sample to your vet rather than paying a visitation fee.

However, Panacur is an awesome cat de-wormer you can get from your vet. Most feed store brand wormers do not handle hook worms or Giardia including Nemex 2 (although labeled for hooks). Panacur is also used to treat Giardia.

You may want to ask your vet for a bottle of panacur first (you will need it anyway) and treat your cat for 3 days with it. Feed her kitten chow during that time and see if that helps.

If it gets worse, I would take her to the vet.

Certain parasites cause cat's feces to smell. I don't remember the name of the parasite, but the odor is memorable. Take her to the vet. Mine identified the smell and prescribed the medicine without even having to do a lab test. Cost less and the treatment worked like a charm. The parasites will spread to other cats using the same box so if you have multiple cats, have them all treated.

Iams is not really a good food....generall the higher quality food, the less waste produced and less smell. Kitten's have a smaller digestive track, so the food does not get processed as well, which can lead to smellier poo. Also feed dry food, it is better for your cat, look for a food with meat as the first ingredient, and with the fewest other ingredients. A better litter can help you deal with the smell also, I like litter pearls, also "world's best cat litter", and you should scoop several times a day with kittens (as their poo is generally 'messier). Good luck.

The suggestion to have the kitten checked is always a good one. You didn't say if you are using canned or dry food. I have found that some kittens/cats do (poo?) better when they are on a dry food diet. Try reducing the amount of canned food you feed it and see if that helps

Could be worms. Have your kitty's stool sample check. Make sure they check for Coccidia and giardia. Some cats just have rotten guts...lol. Or if you give your kitten extra table scraps, it may make the kitty's bowels upset.

If you haven't had it to the vet yet, I would take it with a stool sample and have them check it for worms or other parasites. There are a couple of different problems it could have that would be easily taken care of with antibiotics. Though sometimes, I have had kittens that are just stinky. If it doesn't have anything in its stool sample, I would try a different kind of kitten food and see if that helps at all.
